Great Story

This is a fantastic story! Vivian Maier was an incredible artist who made a living working as a Nanny. Here's a woman that never lost her passion or drive to document the world around her. It was more than just a career, it seemed to have much more purpose. She was a true artist. The work is absolutely beautiful and I hope to see it in a show at some point. Kudos to John for all his hard work.

More From The Community

Over the past year I’ve been spending much of my personal time documenting people, places and things within my community which are instrumental in encouraging intellectual growth, creativity and human synergy. I’ve focused mainly on institutions within our under privileged communities and/or places that don’t require anything from the participants except to learn, grow and interact with the world around them. This “Community Project” has been very refreshing both creatively and emotionally. Here are a few more selects from this project. There will be more to come.

If you want to see more from The Community Project refer to the July and September posts from 2010.

In The Middle

This is a series that I created in Southern Michigan a few months ago. As you may already know, I grew up there and because of this I will always feel a special connection to the landscape and the people who reside there. Here is an excerpt from a poem by David Citino called “In Praise Of The Middle Way”. I believe it accompanies the photos nicely.

In this grand sandwich we are the meat.
Here between left, hardest right,
sweat of get and gone, yea and nay,
too high, too low we broker, stake a claim.
Between the hips, thighs, lips ears

we mediums of sacred hearth are seers.
We temper, we anneal, cross-pollinate
the very thick of things. Who busts
the sod like us? Who lays down tracks, roads?
This country’s middle ear is her balance.

In middle earth we burrow, hunker, root,
and here we take our stand. Look for us
in pit and pith. We mean the mean. Our sense
is place, our privacy. Here we thrive.
In rarefied mid-air, we take pride.
